World Environment Day 2024: JMI Launches EQO App to Track Carbon Footprint, Promotes Sustainability


NEW DELHI: Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) marked World Environment Day with a fervent celebration, demonstrating their commitment to environmental conservation. The day commenced with a Tree Plantation Drive near Nehru Guest House, where Officiating Vice Chancellor Prof. Mohammad Shakeel and other university officials planted trees. Subsequently, NSS volunteers and university staff conducted an awareness walk around the campus and nearby community to promote environmental consciousness.
The Department of Environmental Science at JMI hosted a significant workshop on “Environmental Impact Assessment: Scope and Opportunity,” featuring industry experts and JMI faculty.Prof. Iqbal H. Khan, former VC of MAJU, Rampur, and former Dean of JMI’s Faculty of Engineering & Technology, was the Chief Guest. Prof. Mini S. Thomas emphasized the importance of climate change study and sustainable development, while Dr. Nitin Garg discussed industrial perspectives on environmental management.
Moreover, the department revealed plans for an app titled EQO – ‘Ek Qadam Qudrat ki Or’ to monitor carbon footprint reduction by the JMI community. Prof. Mohammad Shakeel, Officiating VC, urged everyone to renew their commitment to environmental stewardship and make sustainable choices daily.
The NSS unit, under Dr. Abid Hussain’s guidance, organized various activities like Eco-Drive, Poster making, Nukkad Natak, and an environmental lecture. Meanwhile, the Department of Economics hosted an Intra University Quiz and Theme Competition, along with a screening of a documentary on Africa’s dryland climate and food security potential.
Prof. Asheref Illiyan, Head of the Department of Economics, administered a Green Pledge where participants vowed to protect the environment and ensure a thriving future for the planet. Several other departments also arranged events to celebrate World Environment Day, showcasing JMI’s collective commitment to environmental awareness and action.
