UGC de-lists Manipur Sangai International University: Here is why
NEW DELHI: The University Grants Commission has de-listed and removed the Sangai International University in Manipur‘s Churachandpur from its list of recognised universities.
The UGC has advised prospective students and parents against enrolling in any programmes offered by Sangai University, Manipur. The university is not allowed to offer UGC-approved undergraduate, postgraduate, or PhD degrees.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) had repeatedly requested Sangai University, Manipur, to provide the necessary information required for inspection through letters dated July 3, 2015, August 12, 2015, October 21, 2016, March 1, 2019, and January 11, 2021.Despite these multiple written communications over several years, the university failed to submit the required information.
Consequently, the UGC issued a Show Cause Notice on December 19, 2023, giving the university an opportunity to explain why action should not be taken to remove its name from the list of recognized universities maintained by the UGC under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956.
The UGC also sent copies of Show Cause Notices to the Department of Higher Education, Government of Manipur, urging immediate action and soliciting their comments. Regrettably, no response was received from either the University or the Government of Manipur.
The UGC in its notice stated, “The UGC has not received any reply from the university and the comments from the Govt. of Manipur have also not been received.”
The UGC further advised students against taking admission to the University’s various programmes. “Prospective students and parents are hereby advised not to take admission in any of the programme of university from the date of issue of this Public Notice. In the absence of UGC approval, any Degree issued/awarded by the Sangai University, Manipur shall not be treated recognized/valid for the purpose of higher education and employment” the notice stated.
