I am kicking off the new year with guest, Nigerian-born Lola Akinmade Äkerstöm, an award-winning photographer and writer. Akinmade, who lives with her family in Sweden, is the author of a new novel, “In Every Mirror She’s Black” (Sourcebooks, 2021).
How did Akinmade go from working as a Geographic Information Developer for more than a decade to becoming an award-winning photographer and writer? How does she stand apart in a competitive field? In whatever medium she works, Akinmade distinguishes herself through her storytelling.
Akinmade’s photographs have appeared in National Geographic, New York Times, Travel + Leisure, BBC, CNN, The Guardian, Sunday Times Travel, The Telegraph, Slate, Travel Channel, Adventure Magazine, Lonely Planet, amongst others.
She is the author of “Due North,” the 2018 Lowell Thomas Award winner for best travel book and bestselling “LAGOM: Swedish Secret of Living Well,” which is available in 18 languages.
She received the 2018 Travel Photographer of the Year Bill Muster Award and was honored with a Most Influential People of African Descent Award in 2018. She has also contributed to National Geographic’s Image Collection.
