SC cancels grace marks awarded to NEET UG 2024 candidates, orders re-test: Check exam date, grace mark scam and other highlights
NEET UG 2024: The NEET UG results, released on June 4, were met with significant disapproval from both parents and students. Court petitions were filed as well challenging the NEET-UG 2024 results, citing three primary concerns: The awarding of grace marks to certain students, allegations of a leaked question paper, and suspected irregularities at specific exam centers.Many called for an investigation and a re-examination. Consequently, a panel was established to review the NEET UG 2024 results. “The committee has decided to cancel the scorecards of the 1,563 NEET-UG 2024 candidates who received grace marks, and these students will have the option to take a re-test,” the NTA stated. “The exam will be conducted on June 23, and the results will be declared before June 30,” it added. Students who do not wish to re-appear for the exam will have to accept their original marks minus the grace marks.
Taking note of these facts, the bench issued the following order:
“The petitioner, who appeared for NEET-UG 2024, has raised concerns regarding the allocation of compensatory marks to 1,563 candidates. These candidates were granted compensatory marks through the normalisation formula due to not being allowed the full 3 hours and 20 minutes at their examination centres, resulting in a shorter examination time. The compensatory marks were awarded based on the recommendations of a Grievance Redressal Committee, which relied on a judgment from this Court in the case of Disha Panchal vs. Union of India and others.” The Supreme Court emphasised that it will not halt the NEET-UG 2024 counselling process.
The Supreme Court will resume reviewing the other petitions apart from grace marks on July 8. The court has noted that the NTA will officially announce today the date for the re-test for the 1,563 students. However, these developments will not stall the ongoing counselling process.
“Counselling will proceed, and we will not stop it. If the exam is affected, everything is affected, so there is nothing to fear,” the Supreme Court declared.

NEET UG Result 2024: How grace marks led to 67 students with the perfect score
The NTA reported that 17 students achieved a perfect score of 720/720, and six of the 1,563 candidates who received ‘grace marks’ ranked at the top. Additionally, 44 other students were awarded AIR 1 after receiving grace marks for a misanswered physics question. According to the NTA, the question on atoms contained an error in an old NCERT book. Despite this, the provisional answer key released by the NTA on May 29 indicated that Option 1 was correct. This was contested by 13,373 students, who argued that the NTA’s answer did not align with the old NCERT books. The NTA clarified that the question paper was based on the new NCERT book. As a result of this decision, the scores of 44 candidates were raised from 715 to a perfect 720, leading to an unprecedented number of NEET-UG toppers this year.
NEET UG 2024 Result Controversy Highlights
- On June 10, many students protested in Delhi demanding an investigation into the irregularities suspected in NEET UG 2024 results.
- On June 13, the Supreme Court ordered re-exam of the 1563 candidates awarded grace marks.
- Students who do not want to take the re-test have to accept their original marks without the grace marks.
- The apex court has directed NTA to ensure that no delay is made in declaration of results, and the counselling process does not face any hindrance.
- One of the allegations was NEET UG 2024 paper leakage. Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has denied allegations of paper leakage on June 13.
- On 12th June, the NTA released an FAQ regarding the exam, highlighting that the allegation regarding paper leakage wasn’t true.
- Last week, a four member panel was constituted by the NTA to review the NEET UG 2024 result controversy. It included one member from MoHFW, one from NIOS and two UPSC members.
