Reshaping Study Dynamics: CBSE’s Overhauled Exam Structures for Class 11 and 12 Decoded


NEW DELHI: The recent overhaul of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE)’s examination pattern for Classes 11 and 12 is poised to significantly influence students’ academic journey. With a focus on holistic learning and skill development, the revamped structure promises to redefine the educational landscape.

These changes have been introduced by the Central Board of Secondary Education in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

A significant alteration lies in the reduction of the final board exam’s weightage from 100 to 80 percent, with the remaining 20 percent being determined by assessments, practical exams, and project work. This adjustment aims to foster an educational environment that moves away from rote learning, prioritizing instead the application of concepts through competency-based assessments. Such a shift is geared towards nurturing critical thinking and problem-solving skills essential for navigating the challenges of the 21st century.

Moreover, the new format emphasises competency-based questions, including MCQs, case-based, and source-based questions, which now constitute 50 percent of the examination, up from 40 percent. Conversely, the proportion of constructed response questions, encompassing both short and long answers, has been scaled down to 30 percent from the previous 40 percent.
