QS World University Ranking 2025: The latest edition of the QS World University Rankings was released early morning today, reflecting a significant improvement in the rankings of many Indian universities. Notably, 61% of Indian universities have risen in rank, with the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) securing the top spot among India institutes.Globally, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) retained its position as the best institute in the world for the 13th consecutive year.
Indian Universities in QS World University Rankings 2025
IIT Bombay Leads in India. It has shown remarkable progress, climbing from the 149th position in 2024 to the 118th in the 2025 rankings, a leap of 31 ranks. This achievement places IIT Bombay at the forefront of Indian higher education institutions on a global scale. Following IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore have also demonstrated significant improvements. IIT Delhi ascended 47 ranks, moving from 197th to 150th, while IISc climbed from 225th to 211th, a rise of 14 positions.
IIT Kharagpur achieved the fourth position among Indian institutes, jumping from 271st to 222nd in the global rankings. Similarly, IIT Madras made an impressive leap from 285th to 227th, improving by 58 ranks. One of the most significant advancements was made by the University of Delhi (DU), which rose 79 ranks from 407th in 2024 to 328th, securing the seventh spot among Indian universities. IIT Roorkee and IIT Guwahati also made considerable progress, climbing to the 344th and 383rd positions, respectively. Additionally, Anna University, despite a slight drop in ranks, remains a notable mention at 477th. Here is the list of best Indian institutes that made it to the top 500, globally.

QS Ranking 2025: Top Global Institutions
Massachusetts Institute of Technology remains the best institute globally for the 13th year in a row. The second spot has been claimed by the UK’s Imperial College London, which improved from sixth place last year. Harvard University and the University of Oxford are jointly ranked third. The University of Cambridge fell to fifth place from second, while Stanford University dropped from fifth to sixth. The California Institute of Technology (Caltech) made a significant jump from 15th to 10th.
QS World University Ranking 2025: India’s Performance and Challenges
India has shown commendable progress, with 61% of its universities improving their ranks. However, challenges remain, particularly in internationalization. The country lags in the International Faculty Ratio and International Student Ratio indicators. The score for international students stands at a mere 2.9, significantly below the global average of 26.5, and the average score for international faculty is 9.3. Additionally, India’s Faculty/Student ratio score of 16.2 is well below the global average of 28.1.
QS Ranking 2025: Research and Collaboration
India has made significant strides in research and international collaboration. With a score of 37.8, India surpasses the global average of 23.5, securing the second-highest position in Asia for systems with more than 10 ranked universities. Anna University leads in this category with a perfect score of 100, followed closely by the Indian Institute of Science (99.9) and IIT Guwahati (97.6).
