Punjab reschedules summer vacation due to heatwave: List of states where summer holiday dates have been changed amidst rising mercury


Summer Vacation 2024: Several states across India are struggling with intense heatwaves. So, state governments have announced the early commencement of summer vacations for schools in these states to ensure the safety and well-being of students. The decision is applicable to both government and private schools.
The heatwave affecting these states is part of a broader weather pattern impacting several parts of India.According to AIR, the Meteorological Department had predicted a heatwave in pockets of Punjab, Haryana-Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, East Rajasthan, Gujarat, Saurashtra, and Kutch on May 18. These regions are experiencing soaring temperatures, often exceeding 40 degrees Celsius, posing significant health risks, particularly for young children. Consequently, summer vacations have been rescheduled in these regions. Here is the list of states where summer holidays have been announced earlier than usual.
Punjab
Several districts of Punjab are witnessing soaring temperatures. Bathinda recorded the hottest day on Sunday with a maximum temperature of 46.4⁰C. In view of the situation, the Punjab government has rescheduled the commencement of summer vacation. Initially, the holidays were supposed to start from June 1. However, in light of the extreme weather conditions, the vacation period has been changed and will now span from May 21 to June 3.
Haryana
Similarly, the Haryana Directorate of School Education has announced that all government and private schools in the state will observe summer vacation from June 1 to June 30, 2024. This notice was issued on May 17 and circulated to various educational authorities, including district education officers and heads of schools. The directive also noted that both government and private schools will reopen on July 1, 2024.
Rajasthan
In Rajasthan, the Education Department declared a summer vacation starting from May 17 and lasting until June 30 for all government and private schools. The department has issued strict instructions to schools against conducting any additional classes during this period.
Delhi
In the national capital, Delhi, the academic calendar had already scheduled summer vacation starting from May 11 and concluding on June 30. The decision aligns with the city’s annual academic schedule.
Madhya Pradesh
Madhya Pradesh has also adjusted its academic calendar in response to the heatwave. According to the directives of the State Education Board, summer vacation for all government and private school students commenced on May 1 and will continue until June 15.
