NEET UG row 2024: Here is what Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has to say
NEW DELHI: In response to the ongoing concerns surrounding the NEET-UG 2024 examination, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan reassured students that their interests would be safeguarded. Addressing the controversy, Pradhan, as quoted by the PTI, stated, “I want to assure the students that all their concerns will be addressed with fairness and equity. No student will be at a disadvantage, and no child’s career will be jeopardized.”
Rising Competition and Cut-offs
Explaining the increase in cut-off marks and top scorers, Pradhan attributed it to the heightened competition due to a surge in the number of aspirants. “Cut-offs and top scorers are rising because the number of aspirants has increased, intensifying competition,” he stated, emphasizing the impact of greater participation on performance metrics.
Pradhan Addresses Surge in NEET UG 2024 Toppers
Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan addressed concerns regarding the increased number of top scorers in the NEET UG 2024 examination, which has raised suspicions among stakeholders. Pradhan attributed this phenomenon to recent changes in the NEET syllabus, stating, “NEET syllabus reduced as per NCERT rationalised curriculum, questions aligned with state board syllabus,” and emphasized that these adjustments aimed to make the examination more inclusive and reflective of broader educational standards across the country.
Supreme Court Seeks Responses on NEET-UG 2024 Retest Petitions
The Supreme Court notably sought responses from petitioners who had approached various high courts seeking a re-test of NEET-UG 2024 due to alleged question paper leaks and other irregularities. This action followed a plea by the National Testing Agency to consolidate these cases in the apex court to streamline legal proceedings and prevent multiple litigations. Multiple high courts are currently handling petitions requesting actions such as re-tests, cancellation of grace marks, and independent investigations into alleged malpractices during the NEET-UG exam held on May 5.
A vacation bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta consolidated NTA’s petition to transfer cases related to the NEET-UG 2024 paper leak with other related petitions. These consolidated cases are scheduled for a hearing on July 8.
The NEET UG examination took place on May 5 across 4,750 centers, drawing participation from approximately 24 lakh candidates. Despite expectations for results to be declared on June 14, they were announced earlier, on June 4, due to accelerated evaluation of answer sheets. However, allegations of question paper leaks surfaced, particularly in states like Bihar, prompting protests and multiple legal challenges in both high courts and the Supreme Court. Students in Delhi protested on June 10, demanding investigations into the purported irregularities.
Scores reflected unprecedented achievements, with 67 students scoring a perfect 720, including six from a center in Faridabad. This outcome has raised suspicions about the fairness of the exam, especially concerning the allocation of grace marks that allowed these students to share the top rank. Managed by the NTA, NEET-UG is crucial for admissions to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and other sought-after courses in government and private institutions throughout India.
