Mysore filmmaker awarded at Cannes Film Festival: Chidanand S. Naik’s film Sunflower Ver The First Ones To Know won La Cinéf Award




At the 77th Cannes Film Festival, Mysore filmmaker Chidanand S. Naik’s film ‘Sunflowers Were the First Ones to Know’ has been awarded the La Cinéfe First Prize. The film Sunflowers Were the First Ones to Know was made by filmmaker Chidanand S. Naik after studying for a year at the TV wing of the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune. This film is based on a Kannada folk tale, which is about an old woman who steals chickens. The old woman’s mistakes are punished by her son, who is banned from moving around in the village. India emerged victorious in the first and third places. While Chidanand S. won the first prize of the Cinéfe competition, India’s Manasi Maheshwari’s animation film ‘Bunihood’ has won the third prize in this category. Born in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, Manasi studied at the National Film and Television School in UK after studying at NIFT. Manasi made the animated film Bunnyhood during her studies. Two Hollywood films that came second India got first and third place in La Cinéfe category, while Columbia University director S. Asya Segalovich’s film Out of the Window Through the Wall and Greece’s Aristotle University student Nikos’ film The Chaos She Left Behind came second. Winner gets Rs. 13.5 lakhs along with La Cinéfe Prize. La Cinéfe category winner Chidanand from Mysore was given 15000 Euros (13 lakh 48 thousand rupees) by Cannes Film Festival, second place winners S. Asya and Nicole were given 11250 Euros (10 lakh rupees) and third place winner Manasi Maheshwari was given 7500 Euros (6 lakh 74 thousand rupees). Screening of all the films that won in the category will be held on June 3 at Cinema du Pantheon and on June 4 at MK2 Quai de Sien. Chidanand S is the second Indian to win this award. Before Chidanand S. Naik, who won La Cinéfe this year, India’s Ashmita Guha Neogi had won this award in the year 2020. Her film CatDog, made during her studies at FTII, was the winner in this category.
