Jamia Millia Islamia receives E-Vehicle for differently-abled students
NEW DELHI: Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has received a three-wheeled electric vehicle (e-vehicle) to improve accessibility for its physically challenged students. The university launched the vehicle on May 2nd at the Nehru Guest House.
The e-wheelchair provides students with independent mobility, allowing them to control speed, direction, and movement without assistance.This initiative is expected to benefit over 200 students.
Yali Mobility, a Chennai-based startup specializing in accessible vehicles, donated the e-vehicle as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program. The Centre for Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy (CSEIP) at JMI played a key role in facilitating this collaboration.
JMI officials, including the Officiating Vice Chancellor, Registrar, and Dean of Social Sciences, attended the launch ceremony alongside representatives from Yali Mobility and members of the university community.
Professor Eqbal Hussain, Officiating Vice Chancellor, expressed gratitude to Yali Mobility for the donation. He highlighted the existing accessibility features at JMI, such as ramps and lifts, and emphasized how the e-vehicle would further enhance mobility while potentially boosting the university’s rankings in accreditation programs.
Mr. Sakthivel Thayappahn, Director of Yali Mobility, explained their decision to partner with JMI. He cited the university’s rich heritage, strong ranking (third in NIRF), and commitment to inclusivity as factors that aligned with their Project Freedom initiative, which aims to revolutionize accessibility on campuses.
Professor Tanuja, Director of CSEIP, concluded the event by expressing thanks to all attendees.
