IIT Kanpur Celebrates 57th Convocation, Awards Degrees to Over 2,300 Graduates
MUMBAI: The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) celebrated its 57th Convocation, conferring degrees upon 2,332 graduates from various disciplines. The institute acknowledged the dedication and accomplishments of its students during this significant event.
The convocation was held in two sessions, with the main opening ceremony taking place in IITK’s Main Auditorium.Prof. Jayathi Y. Murthy, President of Oregon State University, USA, and an IITK alumna, was the esteemed Chief Guest. Dr. Mahesh Gupta, Board of Governors (BoG), IIT Kanpur, and Prof. Manindra Agrawal, Director, IIT Kanpur, presided over the convocation. The Academic Procession, symbolizing knowledge and tradition, marked the beginning of the proceedings.
The 2,332 graduates represented a wide range of disciplines, including 226 PhD recipients, 457 MTech recipients, 842 BTech recipients, 165 MSc (2-year) recipients, 36 MBA recipients, 12 MTech-PhD (Joint Degree) recipients, 1 MDes (Joint Degree) recipient, 17 MDes recipients, 77 MS (by Research) recipients, 40 PGPEX-VLFM recipients, 26 Double Major recipients, 89 Dual Degree recipients, 14 MS-PD (MS part of the Dual Degree) recipients, 125 BS recipients, and 205 eMasters degree programs recipients.
Prof. Jayathi Y. Murthy, a distinguished alumna of IITK and the first woman of color to lead Oregon State University, presented awards and prizes to the outstanding performers. She shared her inspiring life experiences, encouraging the students to choose their own narratives and create their own paths to success. Prof. Murthy emphasized the importance of living deeply, passionately, and well.
Prof. Manindra Agrawal, Director of IIT Kanpur, congratulated the graduating students, acknowledging the significance of this milestone. He highlighted the spirit of IIT Kanpur that the graduates have imbibed, which will guide them in their future endeavors. Prof. Agrawal also mentioned the academic initiatives undertaken during the past year, including the launch of the Kotak School of Sustainability and several new academic programs.
The convocation celebrated the achievements of exceptional students who received awards in various categories, including the President’s Gold Medal, Director’s Gold Medals, Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma Medal, and Ratan Swarup Memorial Prize. Students who excelled in community services, leadership in student affairs, and art & cultural activities were also recognized.
The graduating students received their degree certificates in different lecture halls during the second session of the convocation ceremony. They will also have access to their digital degrees through IIT Kanpur’s in-house blockchain technology application, which ensures the authenticity and global verifiability of the certificates.
