What are the permitted activities?
Participants in the MATES program are granted the opportunity to reside and work in Australia for a maximum of two years. While it’s not compulsory for visa holders to work within their specific field of study, the program is tailored to assist young professionals in broadening their skill sets and professional networks, particularly within the specified sectors. As a pilot initiative, MATES will initially offer 3,000 places for primary applicants per program year.

Yes, participants can apply to bring their dependents, including spouses and dependent children. These dependents will have the right to work in Australia and will not be counted towards the program’s annual cap.
How long can visa holders stay in Australia?
Visa holders are granted 12 months to make their initial entry into Australia and can stay for up to 24 months from the date of their first entry. The visa permits multiple entries into Australia.
Will MATES visa holders be able to extend their stay?
Participants have the option to extend their stay in Australia by applying for another visa that allows either temporary or permanent residence, provided they meet all the eligibility criteria. However, individuals can only participate in the MATES program once.
How much will the visa cost?
Details regarding the visa subclass and associated application fees will be provided in due course. Additionally, there might be an additional fee for including subsequent dependent family members in the MATES application. Applicants are responsible for covering other costs related to their application, including English language testing fees. The MATES program is set to begin accepting applications in late 2024.
