The Biju Janata Dal on Friday criticized the Bandh / Hartal called by Odisha Congress as a failure. BJD’s Rajya Sabha MP and spokesperson Sasmit Patra said, “The Hartal by Congress on Friday has turned into a joke. Their own leaders did not participate in the protest which was orchestrated by State unit of BJP.”
“A few workers of the Congress party were out for the hartal today. But people of the State out rightly rejected the protest which was being carried out under the garb of a sensitive issue,” said Patra.
“The victim’s (Mamita Meher) father had pleaded not to politicise the matter but the Congress nor the BJP cared two cents to his appeal. Congress is acting as a B-Team of the BJP in Odisha. It is deplorable to witness the downfall of a party which is 136 years old,” Patra further said.
The BJD MP said people of Odisha respect sensitive issues and abhor politicization of matters pertaining to women’s safety and security. “At a juncture where the AICC led by Rahul Gandhi is raising pointed issues concerning general public such as LPG rates, fuel price hike, and farmers’ woes, the State Congress is preferring to keep a mum on these problems,” Patra added.
The Odisha Congress is observing a six-hour ‘hartal’ from 6 am till noon across the state on Friday, protesting against the killing of schoolteacher Mamita Meher and demanding the removal of Minister of State for Home Dibya Shankar Mishra. Reports of peaceful protests are pouring in from the districts.
The HC on Friday said that bandh was not permitted and only ‘hartal’ can be organised. Agitators cannot stop vehicular movement or close any establishment forcefully, it said. It further ruled that rail and road traffic cannot be blocked and only peaceful protests will be allowed.
